2011 Installation Celebration Recap
By Borre Winckel
Traditionally our Annual banner event is held in a Ballroom at a prestigious Downtown Hotel. Two years prior to this year’s event, BIA held the Installation of our Chairman & the Board of Directors at a Night Club. We did this for two reasons. We needed to accommodate a smaller crowd while the membership looked for a more “edgy” setting. The move out of the Ballroom worked with many commenting that the venue change was much appreciated.
For 2011, we changed up things even further without losing sight of the very reasons this event is held each and every year. The all-important ceremony of swearing in Russ Haley and the new BIA leadership as well as the induction of the Hall of Fame candidate took place without a hitch. Council President Pro Tem Kevin Faulconer officiated over the Board of Directors ceremony while Sandy Perlatti inducted Sherm Harmer as the latest addition to BIA’s pantheon of notables who served the industry with great distinction.
This year’s Installation dinner at Il Fornaio was indeed sold-out. Attendees felt they were at an elegant dinner party, with friends and close associates. It was just what the industry needed during these uncertain times. Il Fornaio, located at water’s edge on Coronado Island, provided a spectacular view of Downtown San Diego. Mayor Jerry Sanders, Councilmembers Lori Zapf and Carl DeMaio also attended the event proving once again BIA’s ability to draw on the City’s Movers & Shakers. After dinner entertainment featured dueling pianos which kept a large crowd on its feet until the event closed. A special thank you goes to Elena Haley for her exquisite decorating touches, and to Il Fornaio. We can’t wait for this event to return in 2012.
