Balboa Park Project Gets Council Go Ahead
Following a rancorous 7 hour council hearing that was heavy on insults and sarcasm from opponents of a plan to remove cars from inside Balboa Park, the San Diego City Council voted 6 – 1 to support the ‘Plaza de Panama’ plan that will redirect traffic around the 1,000 acre urban park via a bypass to a new 800 space subterranean parking garage behind the Organ Pavilion. The $45 million project will be funded mostly by a donation by QUALCOMM cofounder Irwin Jacobs who withstood a barrage of personal critism from historic preservationists who oppose the bypass bridge. The BIA joined a host of business organizations and civic leaders that testified in support of the Capitol Improvement Project. It is scheduled to be completed before the parks 100th anniversary in 2015.
